Leaned against the banister
to study your face.
Searched for the unrecognizable.
An image I could replace.
However you were familiar.
Eyes with hidden insecurities.
If words left little doubt,
The air strangled me with ardor.
A sense of defeat and frustration
exposed a shared strife.
The roads we traveled differed.
Our faces dented by the collisions of life.
Scuff marks sullied faded white walls.
Your hands trembled uncontrollably
from cigarette withdrawal.
I waited in vain
for a glimmer of redemption.
You met me halfway
but couldn’t hide your contemption.
Midway down the landing
our eyes met once.
More than our last terminal goodbye
at least you showed a conscience.

"Good night, good night!

Parting is such sweet sorrow.".... (From Romeo and Juliet ) but it seems so apt for the moment.

sad goodbye

maybe you are better off- I liked this poem, but all of the periods make it seem a bit static instead of flowing

An air of resignation and sadness permeates.
