They watch out the window. "Mom, he's here!"
I go outside to meet him,
Followed by eyes that watch from the door.
He waits by his new car, his toy.
"Do you want a ride?" he asks.
"Do you want a ride?" I call
To the small faces at the door.
"No, we'll be fine," my children reply.
"You two go have fun."
We drive around the block, then return.
He accompanies me inside
And is met with more hugs than he can count.
Later, he kisses me goodbye and takes his leave.
"Ew, you kissed him!" my younger child exclaims.
"Cool, you kissed him!" my older one cheers.
"We're just friends," I insist.
"Yeah, right, Mom," from my scornful preteen.
"Friends don't kiss like that."
"What do you want, me to date him again?" I say.
"Why not?" the younger one says.
"Yeah, Mom," the preteen agrees.
"You can't be single all your life."
Sometimes I think they notice too much.
