ROTATION
By Heather Killough-Walden

The Night one night came calling
With gift of bottled wine
To invite The Day to dinner
And dance and flirt – and dine

The ditsy Day did giggle
And blushed her morning pink
Then lifted glass in toasting
Before she sipped a drink

"Lovely Day," The Night entreated,
"Lay back and trust me, Dear
Rest your swelled horizons
And I shall hold you near."

So... as The Day lay sleeping
Drugged and helpless in her bed
The Hungry Night devoured
All beneath her lovely head

He fed upon her flowers
Of bright and summer hue
He drank her deepest oceans,
Sucked them dry of deepest blue

With piercing teeth, he punctured
The valley of her throat
And quenched his thirst, then settled back
To deftly light a smoke

"Never fails," Night did chuckle
And picked his canines clean
"In the morn' she will awaken
And forget where she has been."

"It's my smile," he then decided
Flashing fangs of pearly white
He laughed and shook his handsome head
"It gets her every night."
