Although the poem may have been read
As the poorest of parodies, it was a lament,
For there were those who followed Nietzsche
For whom his quote (we all have heard it)
"God is dead" and Zarathustra
Who preached the power of supermen,
Served instead the fires they set
And smoke from their ghastly ovens.

I never believed in God, so the whole God is dead thing was hard for me to wrap my mind around. However I can see that if you believed in God and then thought he died...well it explains a lot of things.
