Beside the busy highway
thumb out in the breeze
thinking of your body
that misty morning tease,
between the dark of night
bright of a brand new day
all out of words
out of things to say,

A couple cups of coffee
that taste of Styrofoam
a long way to go
a long way from home,
we watch the Weather Channel
drink the watery brew
where should we go
what should we do?

You get out of bed
walk to the shower stall
I watch your supple body
slim, tan and tall,
you turn on the water
leave the door ajar
what did you say
last night at the bar?

The words you said escape me
our actions just a vision
a little bit of fusion
a little bit of fission,
just the two of us
in a world gone quite insane
both of us now naked
in the misty morning rain,

I join you in the shower
we wash each other’s back
embrace the magic water
wondering what we lack,
we each seek salvation
uncertain of its form
stone tablets from above
or tequila and a worm,

Back in bed together
more than a parting kiss
you have things to do
people who will miss
you if you don’t appear
at your office before nine
you drop me on the highway
I say I’ll be just fine,

A truck down shifts its gears
stops beside my spot
the morning sun is bright
it’s starting to get hot,
I climb into the cab
the driver looks ok
he’s heading to the coast
I’ll ride with him all day,

I call you that evening
from a payphone by the sea
end of the public pier
setting sun and me,
run my finger down your spine
kiss you on the ear
we both agree it’s probably
best we’re not too near …
