Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald
crash of the Hindenburg
sinking the Lusitania
chirp of summer's first bird,
Out the bedroom window
open wide to the night
the humanity of it all
nothing's black and white,

I live in shades of gray
pastels that fade with time
in and out of beds
excitedly I climb,
Thinking of grand disasters
songs of summer sparrows
aiming for a bull's-eye
with a limited quiver of arrows,
