Silence greets the stillness of the evening.
The clock chimed midnight some hours ago;
I felt the mattress dip, I heard the swish
Of clothing as you scurried to dismiss
This liaison, as is your custom;
Quiet hangs like fog as I drag the heavy
Velvet curtains to shut out the stars.
Your car purrs its way past the security gates,
Then blends into the night with others
That sprint toward the interstate ribbon
Leading to an elusive happy ever after.
It won't come, you know, if you cannot
Stand still long enough to clean the cobwebs
From the corners, or to discern the color of her eyes,
Or to ask questions that burn holes in your psyche.
Bolting the doors against some vapid intruder,
I return to the tumbled bed, turn onto my side,
And place my hope into tomorrow.
