Robert Frost knew:
there are roughly zones, good fences make good neighbors.
There are places I just cannot take you
and places you go
where I will never tread.
Still, don't be out off by me tending to my walls.
They're not all to keep you out.
Some are meant to keep you safe
when I tuck you inside of me.

Your clarification

Thanks for the clarification. In Frost's poem, the two neighbors meet to repair the wall together. That seems to be one reason why/how good fences make good neighbors. In your poem, the narrator appears to be tending the walls alone -- which may be why the explanation in the last three lines is necessary. And a good explanation it is!

Typo!

Damn. Should read "put off." Good eye. I've looked at it too often.

Hope that clarifies things.
