Because it certainly doesn't work after the last one, when Derek committed suicide in front of his wife, her lover, and her lover's wife.

Like other readers who commented after that last chapter, I think his solution to his problem seemed sudden and extreme. I really can't imagine someone who had been able to enjoy sex with his wife's lover's wife then becoming so depressed as to kill himself.
