Great thoughtful Essay

I would love to try pole dancing. I don't have a daughter, but I could see doing that with my daughter if the opportunity arose. It's about reclaiming the female energy and sexuality. And I'm all for that, given the increasing low self-esteem/body issue problems facing young women today.

How can you have great sex as an adult if you are not comfortable with your body?

Brava for this wonderful insight. And I disagree with the idea that "fitness with a vertical bar" might not be available as a sport in our lifetimes.

After all, Extreme sports have become hot in a matter of a decade or 15 yrs. In 30 years, I could see pole dancing a part of gymnastics or some other sport where female agility is required. It might start small, like a decade with its own competition, before expanding, but I can see it happening.

Vertical bar

Vertical bar sounds much better than pole dancing. I don't think I'd want my daughters learning pole dancing though (lol).

Yet, anything that gets people off the couch and exercising is a good thing.

YES! Finally, a like-minded individual.

There are a number of horizontal bar practices in international gymnastic events. In the Olympics there are 3: One for Women: Uneven Bars [Asymmetric Bars, Asymmetric Parallel Bars, Uneven Parallel Bars] and two for Men: Parallel Bars [Symmetric Bars] and Horizontal Bar [High Bar].

It seems only natural that Vertical Bar events be included someday.

As a male I would like to add that western culture has looked aghast at Hula Dancing, especially for men. No man in his right mind would ever consider Hula Dancing. And yet, the Polynesian Navigators who explored the Pacific without pen and paper navigation logs, passed-down their star-charts to the next generation thru Hula. Perhaps the bravest of explorers in history used dance as a tool.

Ms. Kitt, a nice, thoughtful essay.

Good observations! Some women I know very well are pole dancers and anybody making oral judgements about it irritates me to no end. I have seen pole dance recitals and very much admire the participants of all ages. It seems to require considerable strength and much grace. I don't really see a sexual component to it. I've been to my share of strip joints but never was aroused by the dancers. I found them quite beautiful and wish I'd had my sketch pad with me (I am a figure artist). In any case, thanks for the essay.
