Bad rap for the Grimms

The stories that the Grimms collected (real folktales, not individual inventions like Perrault's) were grim indeed, but far from prudish -- that was 20th-century American censorship. (Forget the movie, it had nothing to do with the real thing.)

<p>No, if you want erotic horror, check out "The Juniper-Tree". The mother first murders her little stepson by beheading him with the lid of a chest. Then she coerces her own daughter into cooking the body into sausages (!) and feeding them to his father (!!). But then a little bird shows up and sings (in North German dialect):

<p>"Pippety pew!<br>

My mammy me slew,<br>

My daddy me ate,<br>

My sister Kate<br>

Gathered all my bones,<br>

And laid them between<br>

Two milk-white stones.<br>

So a bird I grew,<br>

And away I flew,<br>

Sing Pippety Pew!"

<p>In the Grimm version, the bird kills the mother by dropping a millstone on her head and becomes a little boy again; in other versions, it's the father who takes revenge on his wife, and the boy remains a bird. Nothing prudish about any of that.

Fresh View

Much has been written and rewritten as the true meanings of words is lost and our usage shrinks.

I've read the orignal Grimms stories and they are by todays sissy standards harsh and violent.

Say Asian Princess where are you and when will you tickle my mind or seduce my body with your tales,we miss you!! JT

You're everything that a Big, Bad, Wolf could want...Oowwww!

God, you are so good AP! You know, what you wrote here, got me to thinking about all the other, so called "Nursery Rhymes" and do you know what? It's really rather creepy, but every one that I could think of, every single one of them are really twisted, sick, perverted and forbodding anecdotes and I don't understand why? Think about any of them: i.e. "Rock a by Baby, in the treet top...the Baby, cradle and all crashes & burns at the end of that one. Hanzel & Gretal? Think that one through. Goldie Locks and the 3 Bears? Later bitch! What the fuck have we been doing? I would like to know why these twisted tales of slaughter and torture have stuck around with us over the years? Anyway, sorry to ramble here...Thank you again for YOU...Shine
