Crap - now I have to take up hiking and from the last good story I read I have to turn into a 'Nerd' !! I got to quit reading these good story's<<<<you can tell I do not write, but I love to read if the story sounds like it is a good one. Yours was - but are you going to keep it going.? Hope so. I absolutely loved this! I liked how you kept going back and asking about remembering and the hat and whatnot, it gave a very loving tone to the story. The only thing that i disliked about it is the fact that it made me a little jealous/sad that i don't have someone writing letters like this to me. Well done.
