I usually don't provide commentary on my submissions; however, there was a hyperlink to the poem that somehow wasn't posted. If the poem interests you, the brief video clip in the link below probably will also.

This struck a particular chord with me,

since I'm old enough to remember the "duck and cover" drill, though as I recall, we only did it one time, possibly because my school was just about equidistant from Fort Lewis, McChord AFB, Boeing, and Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. I think the CD decided that "duck and cover" wouldn't help much when the Russkies dropped 50 Megatons right on top of the school.<p>

In any case, I think this is quite a good poem--evocative, well-phrased. I'd drop the Bert the Turtle part from the title, as I think it is superfluous. Welll done.

I remember, too

Early in Catholic grade school we had a couple of drills. I also recall the signs indicating the basement for shelter. But I was more scared of the nuns.

Very well done. I remember to those times as well. The drills had become a thing of the past, but them came back during the Cuban Missle Crisis. I agree with EroticOrogeny, the nuns were much scarier than the commies.
