you both did the right thing, you have both expressed your feelings, there is no past to regret, but there is a future to explore.

Well this was a letdown, it gets you to a climax and the story just stops. Unfinished, nada, nothing. The story was going so well building to a potential love story and then, nothing. Since it has been 11 years since the story was published I guess there's not a chance in hell it will ever be completed.
