I like the characters and the set up. Can't wait to read more.
What is confusing about his friend saying he loves him? Especially since he returns the feelings. why didn't he say it back since he was all about being honest and relieving Matthew's worries? I love the story and hope you continue. I would just say to watch details. His mom said in ch 1 that Matthew moved there in 2nd grade. Then he says he remembers meeting him in pre-school. Also his dad was a 'tool monkey' and in ch 2 he wants him to follow dad into business and spend other people's money so I assume he's in finance.
Aside from that, I like the picture you draw of the place they're camping and hope you continue to draw more of a picture of the lives of the boys. I really hope you continue and stay with them through the trip and off to college.
