Or, As One of the All-Time Greats Put It

"My task which I am trying to achieve is, by the power of the written word, to make you hear, to make you feel — it is, before all, to make you see. That — and no more, and it is everything. If I succeed, you shall find there according to your deserts: encouragement, consolation, fear, charm — all you demand; and, perhaps, also that glimpse of truth for which you have forgotten to ask." Joseph Conrad

Most sincere gratitude

Thank you so much for this post. Of all the reviews and essays I have read on this site, I think this might be the most useful and thought provoking. Since I have returned to reading erotica/porn as an alternative to video, I have debated with myself on the differences. I have concluded that in many ways writing may have the edge over video because it gets past the acting and the stage props and takes the reader inside the characters minds and souls and reveals raw honest emotion. Thank you again and please continue to share your tremendous talent with us. max052

Interesting . . .

A thought provoking and interesting article by a competent and prolific Literotica author. Myself I look at a good story as having a number of ingredients of which good descriptive writing is but one. Plot, charachter, realistic dialogue, pace, conflict and crucially - creating empathy with the reader are some of the others.

This article is well worth reading for other literotica authors and aspiring erotic writers on this site.

Excellent Review

I will not claim to have read all of your posts to date Red, but the ones that I have read definitely show exactly what you have written about in this particular post. As the old saying goes: "You talk the talk, but can you walk the walk?". The mind is the one thing open on all frontiers, a canvas on which an artist with the proper words (colors) can mix and match to produce a masterpiece in the mind's eye. Thank you for this very insightful review Red, I couldn't agree more! Best of luck in all your endeavours!

Having just been discussing description v. dialog over the last couple of nights with an author on another site, I found this timely and thought provoking. I for one always love to see what people can create, the imagery they can put in my mind and what I'm able to create as well. Thanks for this piece and keep up the good work!

A fascinating viewpoint.

There are few essayists that mange to convey clarity of thought and be amusing at the same time; you seem to have accomplished it expertly in this little piece. As someone else mentioned, I have not read much of you work - this is, in fact, the first I remember reading, but I shall make a point of watching out for your work in the future.

You are a fine teacher of a sometimes very nebulous activity - thank you; five stars.
