it would have been better if we could have seen how Cad and Bastian's feelings had developed. It really didn't ring all that true that Bastian never knew the fairies were real and yet all of a sudden he's in love with Cad. This could have been done through dream sequences or flashbacks for both of them.

Also, A Prologue comes before a story. An Epilogue is what happens after the main story ends.

So I guess, the thing is as it's a fantasy story it's even more important that it's grounded in reality, emotionally.
