Presumably, the spear had a wooden shaft. The iron/steel spearpoint, by itself, would not kill an old vampire. Kinda surprised that it wasn’t necessary to cut of his head to totally kill him.

Disappointing that Damien had to kill the vamp. Victory also has to depend on luck rather than magic powers, skill or trickery/cleverness.
