From a distance
her wings shimmered
fingers of reflected sunlight.

An imagined smoke
rose from signal fires
a faint haze long past floating.

Gentle waves lapped the shore
forever cast in the westward breeze
a bright silver now dulled with age.

Motionless her Lockheed waited
she reflected upon currents and charts
the horizon always called, always calling.

The rusted bolts fell
aluminum sagged through the years
flight was never an option.

Still, she almost waves
her hair now longer, graying
she tests the wind, then gazes skyward.
