In the middle of the field the little boy stood,
Wanting to live, wishing he could.
He stretched his arms way up high,
As if he could soar, as if he could fly.
Over his head, a bird in flight,
The little boy wished with all his might.
To be like that bird, graceful and free,
To be what he forever longed to be.
A man came along and picked up the boy,
He tossed him in the air as if he was just a toy.
The man said, "Now you are what you were meant to be,
That beautiful bird, graceful and free."
The little bird flew and looked all around,
But the man was nowhere to be found.
Then he heard a voice, "My child I love you, my child I care,
Wherever you go, I'll fly with you there."
This encapsulates the wistful love of a grown child for their parent and the wistful yearning of childhood, beautiful.
of an absent parent in the the poignant fantasy of his child ----heart-tuggingly beautiful !
don't be afraid to show your emotions.....there is one problem with the final stanza in that it is unclear. Your explanation helps. You might write this poem with the comment preceding the poem, such as "written on the occasion of...." Likewise the "the little bird" is the child but unnecessary confusion occurs with the bird in the first verse, also "Then he heard" although we assume it is the child who hears, the fact that the line follows "but the man" creates momentary confusion. Non the less a touching tribute. I prefer clarity but some readers might not.....
I was still grieving the loss of my father when I wrote this poem in high school. It had always been one of my favorites, it in part healed me just thinking of him as that bird. Heaven took my father from me before he was fifty, and as a thirteen year old, I just always wanted my father to be there for me. I guess in a way he still is. Thank you for reading and leaving any comments.
