once a man looked inside himself
and saw an emptiness

how odd, he thought
maybe it is my lack of spiritual community
or perhaps it is the abyss
at the edge of mortality
maybe it is loneliness
or my persistent sexual hunger

but what about all that I am?
what about my family, my friends?
what about all that I have been given?
not enough, it seems

if only I had Her
if She smiled just for me

but no,he thought

life does not include the concept of Enough
completeness means lack of purpose
total satisfaction is death

so he turned from thoughts of fulfillment
and went about his business
filled his time with duty and music
gave thanks for his many small blessings
and occasional epiphanies

he loosely packed the limitless vacuum
with soothing expansive dreams
forever cultivating the illusion of Her

endlessly turning
to keep oblivion at his back

Longing and desire for that Someone for which he's been yearning. Sweet and poignant!

Looking for joy in a life whose leitmotif is sadness.

Sad and yet.....

...hopeful. I found a pervasive sadness throughout this, rather lovely, poem yet, all in all, a positiveness.
