A little girl
Stares at me.
Oh little girl
Staring at me,

What are you thinking?
Staring at me,
With cute eyes unblinking,
Staring at me,

And my different skin colour,
Staring at my
Unusual eye colour,
Staring at my

Strange lips moving,
Staring at my
English gesturing,
Staring at my

Smiling at her,
Staring at me—
Raven eyes of hers
Staring at me

Fearless, curious,
Staring at me . . .

The little girl’s gaze of power
Oh where, oh why, does this transform,
Into a shy submissive flower,
Of cruel Culture’s crushing norms?

When once she stared,
And never cared,
Oh little girl,
Oh little girl—

Keep staring at the brittle world,
And forever stay a little girl
That is one day a woman staring
Fearless, and curious, and staring . . .

Retention.

What a lovely wish ~ that a little girl retain her innocence and wonderment ~ staring with clear eyes as she enters the future. Sensitive rendering ~ tender in it's sentiments.

~~

And then one day that little girl turns into a woman and then you're in some serious trouble.
