I heard your voice before I was born
I heard your laughter, tears and prayers
I knew who you were, destiny would have us meet.
Somewhere around nine months
Give or take a day
What is a day between mother and child?
The room is full neither one of us cares
We labor for one another
I push down to come to you
You labor to pull me to your breasts
Finally through the miracle of life
We meet, eyes unfocused but I know you.
Laying upon your body, cold and scared
I know you are close, I can hear your heartbeat
Everyday I fell asleep to the rhythm
Your hands caress your belly
gracing my skin, I am calmed
your loving touch does this for me.
But I see you, nestled to your breasts
Caressed by your hands
The hands of a mother, I fall asleep
I feel something new, warmth of a mouth
Kissing my fuzzy hair
I like, its me and you Mom.
Time passes on those hands, those lips
Heal, caress, teach, calm me
My life is entwined with you, you show me how to live.
To soon you are showing me another lesson
How to be filled with grace at the end
We will be parted, no more hands to guide me.
Then I get the call, time to hold hands one more time
Memories in such a sterile place
Of a night many years ago when we first met
touched, shared and grew
When I came into your life
a fleeting moment in time
Where you will be leaving mine, tonight.
Your hands soothed me that night.
Now I can only hope
mine are soothing you
Hands we started life with,
will be clasped at the end...
