A Refusal, A Phobia: Mine
By
Denise Noe
Fear: a furnace
I was normal
You were normal
Two normal girls
Being friendsjustfriends
Letstalkaboutguysfriends
Meant holding a metal sheet
Between us
Invisible but heavy
I was scared
I said No
Fear: a furnace
Burned away tenderness
Fellow-feeling
Friendship
Running giggling cheerful chatty
Hihihowsitgoing?
I returned
Anhydrous eyes
From inside a Fortress
Of white ash
Scared: No
