A Refusal, A Phobia: Mine
By
Denise Noe

Fear: a furnace

I was normal
You were normal
Two normal girls
Being friendsjustfriends
Letstalkaboutguysfriends
Meant holding a metal sheet
Between us
Invisible but heavy

I was scared
I said No

Fear: a furnace
Burned away tenderness
Fellow-feeling
Friendship

Running giggling cheerful chatty
Hihihowsitgoing?

I returned
Anhydrous eyes
From inside a Fortress
Of white ash

Scared: No

i liked it

The only reason I didn't give it a fiver was because the tenses in "Running giggling cheerful chatty" didn't seem to flow. Not that the tenses are wrong, they just seem off for the flow of the poem.
