The rulers had considered all and judged
The situation gone beyond mere words –
So word was given and the armies trudged
Their lonely ways in vast and khaki herds.
The war had raged – the district gone in flames
But as the cause was just they'd all agreed
To fight it till the end and signed their names
So no one might misunderstand their creed.
It all was for the best. It shouldn't fail
And peace had come. No war would be again...
A lonely woman, poorly dressed, turned pale
When rounding the last bend in the old lane:
On a shelled wall, still on its bent old nail
A child's red robe hung rotting in the rain.
