It's a frightening thing to let someone else
See the world through your eyes.
That's what we poets do, but it's not always easy.
Whenever you let someone, anyone, see your scribblings,
You immediately leave yourself wide open to ridicule,
Or, what's worse, indifference.

As a poet, you strive to come up with
The perfect words to express yourself.
If you're like me, you're your own worst critic.
By the time your works suits you,
There are a lot of words scratched out
Maybe some crumpled papers lying about.

Everytime I let someone read what I've done,
I tremble inwardly with a mixture of fear and excitement.
Will they love it, as I do, or cast it off, with a "that's nice"?

Perhaps it would be easier to keep our work
To ourselves, but after a time could we accurately
Judge what we've done?
Since each poem is like a child to its creator,
I think not.

To grow, we must share what we've done with
Others, poets or no.
Life is not painless by any means,
And our poetry is our life.

stepchildren.

Sometimes our creative efforts can't be looked at as our child. Sometimes the best we can do is call them our step-children.

A short prose poem about being a poet

And sharing the things that you've written.
