We loved across the great divide
And lord, it was a feast.
Then I alighted from our ride
At last upon the western side,
And she went to the east.

Poor Cupid's aim had been so wide
So often in the past.
His darts were carelessly applied
And they had only grazed my side
Whenever they were cast.

But how his marksmanship advanced
When first she crossed my mind!
Those arrows that had only glanced
Now pierced my core. Our spirits danced,
Our ardent limbs entwined.

This love became a swelling tide,
Our passion flowed, unchecked;
But what we felt, we had to hide,
For those two worlds where we reside
May never intersect.

I still can hear our fervent cries,
Our blesséd bouts of sin.
But then my gazes must surprise
The nervous deer behind her eyes
That bolts to save its skin.

I told myself that I'd deceive
And suffer for her sake,
But I confess that I believe
The flames of our desire could leave
Destruction in their wake.

Those memories to which I cling:
My thirst they cannot slake.
The smart of love of which I sing,
The arrow's most delicious sting
Has turned into an ache.

We loved across the great divide
And lord, it was a feast.
I looked upon her, starry-eyed,
Then toppled to the western side,
While she fell to the east.

You are my favorite poet. I check only this section, often, hoping to find a new gem, and re-read the old ones.
