Above the surface of the ground
Where people mingle every day
Feet shift and laughter abound
No trace of danger close at bay

But on certain days when the sun is high
If you lean down close to press an ear
The harsh breathing of days gone by
Can be heard loud and clear

Every one will not be sensitive to this
Because they have no reason to believe
As for me I can hear the whisper of its hiss
When happiness dawns on its eve

Like a scaly demon beneath my feet
I feel the threat of impending doom
Where happiness and tragedy meet
While around my being flowers still bloom

foreboding.

A sense of foreboding and apprehension seems to be present ~ the threat of impending doom intrudes on the beauty of the flowers still blooming.
