Again Some Day

I met a man along the road
His hair was gray his face looked old
I stopped to chat and say hello
He truly was a wise fellow
He gave me answers to the world
And while I listened my head just twirled
He was as bright as men can come
He did not want to be a bum
He had a wife and family too
But lost his job and they were through
They left him on a cloudy day
Ever since he’s been this way
He was not mad and did not bitch
His voice never reached a fevered pitch
The tales he told were filled with love
I pictured all five just like a glove
I bought us coffee then we walked
The whole time I let him talk
If he talked for a minute he talked for a day
Sometimes so sad I had nothing to say
The most well rounded man I ever met
The chance he needed hadn’t happened yet
His confidence was torn to shreds
Failing his family was stuck in his head
His heart was broken and he was trying to cope
He never turned to drinking and he stayed off dope
We turned down an alley and sat on the stairs
He pointed with his finger then said we were there
He lived right there inside a box
His blanket torn his pillows rocks
I went to get us food to eat
And a new pair of shoes for his bare feet
He said the next time as if he knew
With a second chance right he would do
When I left that night I was happy and sad
I had gotten that chance he hadn’t yet had
When I get home each night I pray
That he’ll be with his family again some day
