contemplating the garish gleam and glitter
of grand buildings, plans, and gestures,
I felt the deep beat of disbelief
when common beauty struck my soul
and found it hollow
I fled to a simpler place and there
sheltered by the arms of the giant banyan tree
in calm repose
splashed in the dirty, sacred river
with ragged clothes
in small tasks done with love
complex beauty found me and fulfilled me
