And so it's come to this,
I'm the last guard at the post,
I've called for reinforcements,
If they come, who knows?

I think I hear them calling,
but wait it's coming from the front,
it must be the enemy,
returning to take our homes.

I load my rifle,
I do it quick,
They are getting closer,
I hope the trigger doesn't stick.

I see them now,
running straight ahead,
BANG!
I know my shot has hit home,
for one of them falls dead.

It's been a few minutes now,
I'm hidden behind the rock, behind the barn
I think I'll take a shot now,
I lean out and,
ARGGG!

One of them shot,
when I took a peek,
I know I'm gonna die,
bloods collecting at my feet.

Something new has happened,
my calvary arrives,
the reinforcements mow down the enemies,
but I'm still gonna die.

The medic comes over,
says "Fuck, oh god damn",
I'm sure now it's true,
that I'm a dead man.

I see the light,
and my life passes before my eyes,
I hear death's call,
I'm just about to die.

"Tell them I died...",
I said with my last breath,
and I whisper my last words,
as blood came out my eyes,
"Tell them I died,
staring at the red, blue, and white."

Reads like an old time ballad ~ quite charming - really.
