what do you do
when the lines you cast
come back with even larger hooks
and more appealing lure?

I might be caught twirling
writhing heavy on the line.

what about those
who don't even like us?
what do you think when those lines are cast?
and what about us—
hooked, bound, breathless
and then released?

Someone is going to gut me good.
Knife-strip off my scales
and decapitate me in preparation for dinner.
