Maybe this is what the Irish mean when they say pine away

I never gamble when I know I'll lose.
I wasn't looking, never thought to find
this thing that I would never dare to choose,
and now I think I've almost lost my mind.

It wasn't what I meant when I first reached
my hand to you, I meant to be a friend.
But somehow all the walls I built were breached
and I have lost the will to make them mend.

Your voice reached down to shadows where I hid,
your storm-green eyes touched memories in my soul.
No matter how I try I cannot rid
myself from needing you to make me whole.

A thousand years I waited for your touch,
a hundred lives I only wanted you.
I've never felt a thing that meant this much,
no one has ever known the me you do.

I die without the power to make you stay.
My heart is shattered as you walk away.
