Look at me!
I'm as black as she!
My hair is not kinky
My lips not as full.
My mind is as black
And my heart like a pool.
A pool of the blackness
You say I don't possess.
Look beyond my light skin
And my soul will attest.
It will tell of the struggle
Of two worlds apart.
One white, one black,
But where do I start.
One side despises me
And the other makes fun.
But my father is black
So that makes me as one.
One just like you
My black sister and brother.
I am a beautiful black woman
And refuse to be any other.
My hair may be straight
And my lips not quite full.
But that's not my fault
So why be so cruel.
Our race has all colors
So why be so mad.
I am as black as you inside
And the outside, too bad.
I can't change my skin
Or kink up my hair.
I can't darken my eyes
Or a dark child bare.
I can't full my lips
Or not burn in the sun.
What I can be is black,
And white all in one.
Accept me for me,
I am one of you.
So don't front me or play me
And dog me out too.
Black, I am
And black I shall be.
I'm a true black woman
So recognize me.
