For the life of me, I don't know why
you seldom hold your head up high
and let me gaze upon your face
so beautiful, so full of grace

With eyes of mischief, fine black pearls
shine naked, save for lashes' curl
Why deny the world this splendor
of noble cheekbones, neck so slender?

I fear, sometimes, I fear ‘tis I
which causes you to turn inside
Your radiant smile can turn so cross
I feel the chill, I mourn the loss

Is it I who causes you to hide
your playful joy, so deep inside?
I have no malice, I mean no harm
I'd not deny the world your charm

Black Beauty, won't you raise your chin
and let me see your face again?
Remove your veil, so all may see
how beautiful a smile can be.

Author's note: This is my contribution to Black History Month, about a girl I once knew.
