(dedicated to Bob Dylan
and to John Travolta for his "Phenomenon" performance)
Possibilities
POSSIBILITIES
floating around me in the wind
like so many maple leaves
Possibilities, graceful possibilities
lucrative possibilities,
lewd possibilities
primal possibilities,
moral possibilities,
pathetic possibilities,
fatal possibilities
some I can easily grasp:
others, year after year elude my finger-tips
till my spirits have turned not to yellow, red,
or any other natural hue of Fall
but to a seething and melancholy blue
For though the authoritative, corporate, computerized voices
repeat to me that my life is over,
I still see green possibilities
nonetheless, one way or the other,
I believe it fitting
(for me and for you)
to take contemplative, star-gazing moments,
To thus know that a single life
(whether lean with discipline or
with innovative ambition swollen huge)
is but a passing note
in the insurpassable cosmic fugue
