Shards of shattered glass strewn across
The floor, marriage on the rocks
Glistening on the razor’s edge
That slices deep, slices to the bone
Cutting through the joy, through the shields
Blood spurting, bloody failure,
     Bloody day
Impossible choices, steely resolve
Hardened positions, bunkers and death
Venom ringing through the air, sinking
Deep within the brain, poisoning my heart
Peace long departed, truce unattainable
All flags now are red, crimson, tattered
As battles rage, innocents in the crossfire
Weeping for the loss, for shining promise
Long murdered, left bleeding in the dust

Architects of our own failure, impasse
Of long and careful design, bitter fruit
And bites too large to chew
     Or swallow
Beds long made, filled with adders
No surprises here, only wonder that
Love can fall so far, parachutes failing
As we plummet towards our looming end
Beware what you wish for, for you may
Get it, and then what will you do
On the day that you choke on the dregs
That linger in the bottom of the chalice,
Remnants of a wine once sweet, turned
Vinegar that bites as do the fangs sinking
Into beloved flesh, sinking beneath the waves,
Submerged in oceans of despair and sorrow,
Hidden beneath waves of scarlet stain from
Blood spurting, bloody failure,
     Bloody days
