They show up at school,
boogers in their nose,
bloodshot eyeballs,
and bodies dirty from play.

They ask, "Are you my teacher?"
"Yes," we say,
knowing we are teacher,
philosopher,
saint, and PAUPER!

...but they accidentally call us Mommy,
and suddenly we are rich.

Author Notes

A couple of weekends ago, I babysat for a friend of my partners. The child and I went to the back yard and played with all of the cats I feed. During the feeding, the five-year-old called me Mommy. It felt so good.

My friend is studying to be an early childhood teacher. I combined the thought of her teaching and the event in my backyard to create this for her. This one is yours, my Jellybean.
