When did the branding occur?
Was placement perceived and measured
Yet hidden amid the innocent words of the first invitation?

The effect of your power is given.
Surely you knew, once agreed, I would never want to go.
You extended blissful courtesies, pretending you did not own me.

You laid a cautious, tempting trail of sweet breadcrumbs.
Starved and bewildered, as if Gretel, I sought whatever waited.
I savored, each morsel of you, and silently pleaded for more.

When did the branding occur?
Was it when you gave me the freedom to speak, unashamed?
Words I did not know spilled copiously from my lips, as you smiled.

You had to know, even then,
That your mark had already begun to burn, invisibly, into my core.
Each time, a bit further. Each desire, deeper. Each parting, more bittersweet.

With great delight, I returned to you, again and again.
Eyes shining and unsure of anything
Except my need to be there, at your feet, or curled beside you as you slept.

When did the branding occur? It didn’t.
The invisible mark I wear for you
Is the finest, ever changing symbol of all that you may ever release to me.

You marked me, day one.

Not being literally true but the message is still there; of how, when giving yourself to someone, your soul becomes branded, even in the most vanilla of relationships.
