When Granny died we had her cremated
It was what her will said to do
And who were we
To deny an old woman’s request?

She said she wanted her ashes spread over Appalachia
For 47 years that had been her home
In a place where the world saw backwards people
She saw only angels and men.

For the past two days I’ve been burning paper
All the cards and letters sent over the years
Garbage bags full of appreciation
For the woman that she was.

As I cast each single one into the flame.
I feel as if she’s being cremated all over again.
And as the smoke and ash float over Appalachia
Her final wish is granted.

A finely written tribute

With wishes well respected

With burning of thoughts

That were private...

Significance

this reminded me that the greatest honor we can pay to the living and dead is that of significance. I wept.
