Candles Of The Universe

Dipping below the horizon,
Another day moves to dusk,
And we descend into silence
as twilight cools the mind
and soothes the soul.

The night embarks upon us;
The air, crisp and fresh,
Wisps gently over the skin.

Then suddenly,
As if a handful of silver
has been tossed from the edge of the world,
Stars spill out into the night sky,
Cascading down one by one.

Stirring the emptiness
with dimension and form,
The candles of the universe are born.

Unfurling before us
do the heavens unfold,
A shimmering sky
turns from silver to gold.

Loneliness soon fades
beneath the canopy of light,
And now but a memory
the day drowns in night.

With all that’s untold
now unveiled to see,
Venturing forth into night
we are free,
As unity and mystery
wash over us.

We rise to the daunt
of the mortal man’s whim,
Fulfilling his fear
is our calling.

For night after night,
By the mortal man’s sin,
Do his fears of the haunt
leave him crawling.

When the clock strikes twelve,
Under a pale winter’s moon,
The dreaded hour has come;
There’s a ruckus, and a rumble,
Something stirring in the tomb,
The haunt has now begun.

Rising from the womb of mother earth,
Our pondering eyes lurk in the stillness;
And as the beat of life
lures us from a slumbering rest,
It’s from six feet under
that we crawl from the nest.

Pulling free of the tethers
that embody the soul,
We climb from our prisons
laden below.

Moving now freely
we brush ourselves clean,
And we clamor about
like small angry children.

Bickering and snickering
and grumbling,
Clanging our chains,
So deathly humbling,

Round and round we move
with no footsteps to guide us,
As we take to the air,
whirling about in ghostly fashion.

Moaning and groaning our ritual chants,
Encircling graves in ritual dance,
For it’s life in the everafter.

Faster and faster we go,
Now moving viciously
in a mad torrent of air.

Then, one by one,
Like a sling-shot,
Shooting out of the vortex we go,
Rising rapidly into the air,
And in a blur we are gone.

One by one,
We depart in such fashion,
Returning again before dawn.
