Captured Starshine

Captured Starshine

She captured starshine in her eyes
And let me have a peek
It danced and twinkled merrily
And made my heartbeat weak

Sweeter than soft candlelight
It put moonlight to shame!
And sparkled with a fire alive
And bade me lose my name

So willingly I cast myself
Inside her seas of brown
The waves came crashing over me
I was happy to be drowned

The captured starshine spoke to me
And begged me hear its plea
“A prison here inside her eyes
Will just not do for me.”

It whispered tales of distant lands
And galaxies untold
Of seas and love, of longings grand
And armored knights of old

It promised it would dance with me
Atop the sky and sea
The universe would be all mine
If I’d but set it free

Her eyes were vibrant sparks of fire
They stole my soul that day
I could not ever give them up
So I had this to say

“I'm sorry I can't take your deal
I rather like you there
Starshine winking from her eyes
And bouncing off her hair

I love her eyes the way they are
And so I am afraid
An offer of the universe
Won’t induce me to a trade”

The captured starshine twinkled
It could behave no other way
Her eyes danced and sparkled with the light
And took my breath away

Her charms had wooed that feckless light
Down from the nighttime sky
Its freedom was not mine to give
(nor would I even try)

I reached out to hold her hand
And asked her so I’d see
If a girl who'd captured starshine light
Would deign to stay with me

I fell for her that afternoon
A love both pure and true
I fell for her because her touch
Was captured starshine too
