Like a forgotten ticket stub
found in a pocket, your love -
faded, falling apart. Proof
you paid your dues
in the lions mouth that bit
through flesh, and bone,
as if they were cotton candy.

Carnies in your nightmares scream,
"Freaks! Freaks! Freaks!"
They know it can't be fun for everyone
in your private Fantasyland with him, kids in tow,
like nothing is wrong, in your long-sleeved blouse
covering bruises, and black eyes hiding
behind dark sunglasses.

You see Futureland ahead,
where everyone is a winner,
but you pass by each time,
afraid to get in line.
You're a Timex clown clock,
taking a pricking but keep on licking.
A sucker swirled into inaction.

Do you take solace knowing you're not alone -
that there's one born every minute?
