Clockwork and rocker arms
Can you detect the touch of man in the spin of hands
On a watch, on a clock, tension and torsion making time
In the ceaseless heartbeat of spring-driven machines
Or the age-old throb of lust and blood
The rhythm of sex in the tick of seconds,
the pulse of minutes
and the sweet deep roll of a thousand years
The diesel arms of a submarine engine
Or the rise and fall of the oil drill
Approximate the thrashings of beasts in heat
Shaft and rod and casing, oil and breath and sweat
Science imitates art imitates life
Men build machines with rhythm and stroke
So we can live our lives in shirts and ties
And watch our automata live our libidos in steel
