our writing pads are lily pads
floating in a pond,
ponder on deep muck

some of us cut adrift by rusting scissors
others by swiftly slicing shiny teeth
still others ripped by shredding

we have learned not to cry
as our limbs grow back
like children never severed,
without grasp,
sinking away
