sleepless I dwell on Summer at a crawl
dying at a desk, melting wax under sun
signs point to life when work is through
they point to the earth we’ll live anew

this happened before, still no solace
under the solar gaze, nothing new
drain loss of years to hollow reason
cracked brown skin, always this burning season.

the dirt would be cold, some other time
wake up tired, step into the fire
pain points toward peace to come
we all march to the same war drum.
