What seems like a lifetime ago,
first day at school when I was low,
you came and held my hand.
When teased by the class lout,
so often at me teachers shout,
you said "please don't cry".

As into teenagers we grew,
you were my best friend, that I knew,
you came and held my hand.
When my first love laughed, walked away
and I did not want another day,
you said "please don't cry".

The obvious thing that I'd missed,
you the beautiful woman now I kissed,
you came and held my hand.
As on sun strewn downs we lay a'heather
you whispered you would be mine forever,
you said "please don't cry".

Through the hell of birth you gave us child,
calmed me down as I went wild,
you came and held my hand.
When I told you of love so much,
your warm kiss, gentle touch,
you said "please don't cry".

Then dark clouds spreading sorrow,
so deep concerns of your tomorrow,
you came and held my hand.
A smile in your pain of death,
as with your very last breath
you said "please don't cry".

It was a lifetime ago,
upon my face it tends to show,
no one to hold my hand.
The cancer that took you away
means that now and every day,
I cry.
