dark or light

sun just cresting over the horizon
difference between night and day
border between dark and light
stars still filling the sky above

for a moment coldness grips her heart
eyes cautiously open
that moment between sleep and awake
not remembering where she is

wanting to return to sleep
memories that haunt her of the days before
there is warmth in dreams
not the fear that weighs her down

trapped under a heavy weight
panic grips as her hands reach for purchase
tapered fingers tips slither along her body
finding what holds her still, testing

cobalt gaze adjusting to dimness
seeking to confirm what she hopes she may find
whimpering softly as she fears still it was all a dream
finally breathing once more when dreams are reality
