Click hereFrom darkened shadows, a voice cried out
A voice so weak and small
Fear and pain, it lingered there
But no one heard her call
The shadows were the enemy
So dark and cold and still
They clung to her and held her there
All against her will
Shadows, shadows everywhere
Hiding her from light
All hope she once had counted on
Had faded from her sight
She heard his steps approaching
As she heard them every night
They thundered in her little ears
Her body shook from fright
The floor beneath her little form
Shuddered with each step
She backed herself against the wall
Her heart within her lept
A small and ragged teddy
Lay crumpled near the stair
She reached for him and held him close
And whispered, “Help me bear”
The shadows danced their darkened dance
The room it ceased to be
She found a place within herself
A place that she called free
A brook it babbled, the flowers grew
The sun it shone so bright
She held the hand of her friend bear
As they played with such delight
And when he finished his evil deed
He tossed her to the side
And once again the shadows loomed
And a part of her had died
Dark shadows, they are hungry beasts
They swallow and consume
Destroying all that they surround
To send them to their doom
Though the mind it is a beacon
A saving light within
It stands and fights the shadows
And often it does win
But dark shadows are much stronger
They yell so loud and shrill
They gnash their teeth and show their claws
And eventually, they kill
So listen, listen closely
To the shadows you pass by
Reach out to those who cry in pain
Who otherwise will die
Shadows, dark and gloomy
Lurk wherever evil grows
They take away a childhood
And no one even knows.
I think you have found your niche with poetry. This is one my favorites that you have written. The mental images that this piece evokes are very strong.
Good job!
I loved the way you put the harsh reality into words. Very well done. Even though the poem is titled 'Dark Shadows', I like the little ray of hope and strength in there --
Though the mind it is a beacon
A saving light within
It stands and fights the shadows
And often it does win
Too true. Here's to hoping that those little lights are never snuffed.
