Conversation dwindled
Moonlight lattice through the old maple
Embers glowing
crackling
cackling
counting down the moments to the end
of the night
in the silence that slid and slipped
I couldn't help but wonder
if you, too, were imagining our embrace
arms tight around my waist
my face pressed into your neck
sampling the salt of your skin
lips meeting under starlight's glimmer
a spontaneous smile
only a daydream, for now
I couldn't see your face in the darkness
only the firelight in your eyes
or was it the sparkle of my secret love
shining so brightly through you
